Chia Seeds

Bioactives: Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Calcium , Magnesium, Phosphorus & Manganese.

Mechanism of Action: A 15g serving of chia seeds contains 10 percent of the calcium you need in a day while also meeting 15 percent of your daily manganese requirements to help build stronger bones. Calcium is the building block of bones, and 99.5% of calcium in our bodies is present in bones while Manganese is a co-factor in the formation of bone cartilage and bone collagen, as well as in bone mineralization. Deficiency of manganese leads to osteoporosis. In a Belgian study involving severely osteoporotic women, only manganese among 25 variables studied was significantly different between the two groups. Luckily, Manganese deficiency can be addressed easily through dietary sources. The PUFAs present (Polyunsaturated fatty acids) are reported to promote bone health in older people. Long term administration of chia seeds in rats has also been shown to increase bone mineral density (BMD).


Flax Seeds

Bioactives: Omega 3 Fatty Acids (ALA), Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus & Manganese.

Mechanism of Action: Flax seeds have been shown to have a beneficial effect on bone mineral density, bone mineral content and displayed reduced markers associated with osteoporosis. Alpha linolenic acid (ALA) found in Omega 3 fatty acids is related to the recruitment and maturation of pre-osteoblasts, thus promoting bone formation. The ALA increases calcium absorption in the gut, promoting mineral deposition in bones. Flax seeds also increase a bone creating protein called osteocalcin and reduce the levels of deoxypyridinoline in urine (a compound that's normally present in healthy bones - its presence in urine is a specific marker for bone resorption associated with osteoporosis).


Alflafa Grass Powder

Bioactives: Vitamin K & Ipriflavone.

Mechanism of Action: The Ipriflavone present in alfalfa grass enhances the action of calcium, inhibits bone loss, promotes bone formation, promotes the deposition of the bone matrix, aids in mineral absorption into the matrix and improves bone strength. Spirulina Powder

Bioactives: Amino Acids, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc & Phosphorus.

Mechanism of Action: Spirulina contains lysine and arginine which play an important role in bone formation. The lysine preserves bone density by helping in the body’s absorption of calcium and decreases the total amount of calcium that is lost in urine. In addition, lysine works in conjunction with vitamin D to help build and maintain strong bones while blocking the enzymes which break down collagen. Similarly, arginine also protects against the breakdown of collagen and supports the growth of osteoblasts (bone forming cells). The bioavailability of calcium from Spirulina is higher than that of calcium carbonate tablets and is greater than even milk containing an overall higher calcium content. Experiments on rats have shown higher bioavailability of calcium as well as magnesium and phosphorus from Spirulina. The alkaline phosphatase enzyme levels, which are increased during hypocalcemic conditions were also shown to be normal when treated with spirulina. Along with this, spirulina has been demonstrated to prevent osteoporosis in roziglitazone induced diabetic rats.
